Total Eclipse 2017

Total Solar Eclipse

150 years in the making

On August 21, 2017, at approximately 1:10 p.m. Central time, a total eclipse will sweep over the country, and Warrensburg, Missouri is in the path of totality. Which means anyone in the northern part of Warrensburg, Missouri will experience total darkness in the middle of the day. Mingle with the locals at Knob Noster State Park or other local viewing "parties" to see this incredible moment in history.

  1. This is the first Total Solar Eclipse in the continental USA since 1979; and the first one to cross the continent from ocean to ocean since 1918. It is the first total solar eclipse to be visible from ONLY the US since before 1776. For Missouri this is the first total solar eclipse since 1869, and for some areas of Missouri it is the first since 1442.

    1. The path of totality runs from the pacific coast of Oregon to the Atlantic coast of South Carolina. There are 12 million people living on the path of totality; 88 million live within 200 miles! The entire population of the USA is no more than a long day’s drive from the path.

  2. In 1991, an eclipse was visible from Hawaii and Mexico. Mexico closed the border with the US to anyone without hotel reservations because they could not handle the volume of people.
  4. There is a total solar eclipse approximately once a year somewhere on the planet, but the zones of visibility are often over water or over countries which are considered unsafe for travel by westerners.

  5. Eclipses are significant in history, culture, art as well as science. Scientists will not only be engaging in cutting edge science that cannot be achieved any other way, but they will be harnessing the power of the US population through citizen science.
